Abstract

A look behind the curtain of email authentication, what it is, what it isn't, what it does and why we need it.

Email is one of the oldest electronic mass communication standards still in regular use, and continues to be relevant despite many rumours of its demise.

Part history lesson, part how-to, and part rant about why we can't have nice things; in this talk I will explore the ways in which email has evolved from a product in the early internet where everything was clearly trustworthy up to being the established baseline form of communication for today’s internet where we need to be just a little more discerning in who we trust, and how we tackle the problems of abuse and spam without becoming a closed ecosystem.

I will look at authentication standards, how they work together, why they succeed and why they fail.
